Postgraduate Research Students may apply to BAJS for Conference-related Financial Support. This is intended to make a contribution to travel, registration or accommodation costs where other support is unavailable. BAJS Council will accept one Conference Attendance Support application per postgraduate student per academic year when there is not a BAJS (main) Conference and two when there is, with one of those being the BAJS Conference. When considering applications, BAJS will give highest priority to those whose participation will clearly contribute to the applicant’s career and academic development.

• Restricted to postgraduate students registered at a UK HEI on doctoral or post-doctoral programmes, or awaiting their VIVA.
• Students must be members of BAJS.
• Students must be presenting at the conference for which support is requested.
• The student’s presentation must be in Japanese Studies and will normally be related to the applicant’s PhD dissertation.
• Individual applications are limited to £400 for conferences outside the UK, and £250 for conferences within the UK.
• Applications should be made by the student via the online application form, at least two months prior to the event. Retrospective applications will not be considered.
• If the application is approved, funding will not be disbursed until proof that the student has presented at the conference/workshop and original receipts of expenses are received electronically to bajs@bajs.org.uk

PLEASE NOTE:

BAJS does not require students to provide proof of travel insurance when seeking funding to attend a conference. However, we strongly recommend that students arrange for appropriate cover either on a personal basis or through their university / institution.

Please be aware that it is not possible for BAJS to reimburse costs incurred by students in obtaining visas if they are later unable to attend a conference for any reason, including illness and delays in the visa application process.
